DETROIT TO HOST MAJOR AAU NATIONAL EVENTS
The Detroit Metro Sports Commission (DMSC) will host two national Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) championships this summer. The AAU Junior Olympic National Track & Field Qualifier will be held July 9-12, at the North Farmington High School. More than 2,000 boys and girls age-group athletes will compete for a chance to move on to the 2009 AAU Junior Olympic Games to be held in Des Moines, IA.
Following the track action at North Farmington High School, basketball will take center stage in Detroit for the AAU 12U National Boy’s Division 2 Basketball Championship competition scheduled for July 20-24 at Lake Orion H.S; Auburn Hills Avondale H.S.; and Lutheran Northwest H.S. in Westland. It is expected that more than 50 teams from across the U.S. will take part in the tournament, with more than 1,500 parents, guardians and family members.
